Description

CPI’s Glucose-Glutamic Acid (GGA) Standard for BOD5 Testing are made in accordance with the Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater. Adding 6.0 mL of CPI’s GGA Standard (or 3.0 mL of CPI’s Double-Strength GGA Standard) to a 300ml seeded BOD5 bottle will result in a BOD5 of 198 +/- 30 mg/L. According to Standard Methods “Glucose has an exceptionally high and variable oxidation rate, but, when used with glutamic acid, the oxidation rate is stabilized and is similar to that obtained by many municipal wastes.” Since this material is so readily oxidized, care must be taken to make the solution up fresh prior to use. To “preserve” the material, it should be kept sterile. Bulk bottles of GGA Standard may be sterile until opened, but keeping them sterile until used up is an uncertain issue. It is so uncertain, we do not offer bulk bottles as a product, and do not recommend them to labs whose data is of regulatory importance. Standard QC steps include heterotrophic plate count, TOC and COD.
